riginally born and raised in Macau, Stephanie Yeung moved to the United States for college and received her Ph.D. (’08) in bioengineering at UC Berkeley. While studying abroad, Stephanie found herself fascinated by the mix of cultures in the U.S. and eager to understand them through people and their stories – the elements for her inspirations.

Apart from hand sewing and tailoring experience, Stephanie was taught how to sew unintentionally by her mother since young. She has always been curious about how things are put together, and this curiosity led her to the study in science and engineering, her other passions. While in graduate school, she had the opportunity to develop high-tech tools for forensic investigations, which completely satisfied her passion for fighting against injustice. However, Stephanie realized that her passion for fashion design only grew bigger over time. Without wasting any time, Stephanie debuted her first collection at the UC Berkeley Fashion And Student Trends (FAST)’s Fall 2008 runway show as soon as she wrapped up her dissertation. She explored the idea of sustainability in fashion by incorporating unconventional materials, and has since been passionate about sustainability issues in fashion. In love with the runway experience, she continued to show her second collection at the Spring 2009 show, which was inspired by her travel to the Lao city Luang Prabang. The romantic scene of the saffron-robed monks and the simple riverfront village life harmonized with a sense of the French colonialism in the fishing town were all reflected in the spring  ’09 collection.

Stephanie loves every opportunity to use unfamiliar materials as a challenge for new ideas. She is now working as a freelance fashion designer and looking for opportunities to build a career in the fashion industry. By combining her passion for fashion design and science, she hopes to make positive societal impacts, especially in the issues of women, children and the environment.
